In this conference, Architect Hiromi Hosoya will introduce the future of “Industrious Cities” through ongoing projects in Zurich and research in Harvard University, while rethinking the urban industry in the actual digital age.

Originally, consumption and production, working and living, were physically and functionally integrated in the city. However, the idea of “zoning” separated these functions.
Today, daily exchanges and transfers between people become faster and smaller in scale, increasingly emission-free, while innovative manufacturing is preferred over mass-production.
Under such conditions, what’s the meaning of separating the different functions in architecture and in the city? What would the city become if the separation disappeared, allowing the co-existence of production, working, living and leisure? What opportunities would arise if we redevelop urban areas in an era where urban-rural separation, migration and demographic changes are increasing with digital technology?

Hiromi Hosoya is an architect based in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2003, she co-founded the Hosoya-Schaefer Architects together with Swiss Architect Markus Schaefer. She is engaged in innovation in architecture, urbanism and communication design.
